Last reviewed 10 October 2026 · How Tax Letters checks its facts
The short answer
- What lenders ask for
- GOV.UK says you might be asked for these documents as evidence of your income, for example if you are applying for a mortgage and are self-employed.
- How many years
- GOV.UK says you can get evidence of your earnings (SA302) for the last 4 years once you have sent your Self Assessment tax return, and that you can also get a tax year overview for any year.
- How to get them
- GOV.UK says you can print your own tax calculation and tax year overview if you do your Self Assessment tax return using either HMRC's online services or commercial software.
- Which lenders accept them
- GOV.UK publishes a list of mortgage providers and lenders who accept a SA302 tax calculation and a tax year overview. The lenders on it have agreed to accept tax calculations and tax year overviews that customers, or their agents or accountants, have printed themselves.

How long it takes
GOV.UK's SA302 page says you cannot print your documents until 72 hours after you sent your tax return.
GOV.UK's guide to your Self Assessment bill says you cannot view your calculation for up to 72 hours after you submit your return, and that if your payment is due in this time you will need to save a copy of it before you submit.
GOV.UK's guide to your Self Assessment bill says that if you filed a paper return, HMRC will send your calculation by post.

Other dates, as GOV.UK states them

- GOV.UK's guide to your Self Assessment bill says you get a tax calculation when you have filed your Self Assessment tax return or if the amount you owe changes.
Why you might need it
GOV.UK's guide to your Self Assessment bill points to its SA302 page for how to get a copy of your tax calculation, for example if you are applying for a mortgage or if you need one on HMRC header paper.
This page covers getting the documents for a mortgage. What an SA302 is and what it shows is explained in Tax Letters' guide to the SA302, linked further down.
Information, not advice: whether a particular lender accepts a document you have printed yourself is for that lender to say.

Your options
Print both from your HMRC online account
GOV.UK says that if you use HMRC's online services you log in to your HMRC online account, go to 'Self Assessment', then 'More details about your Self Assessment returns and payments'.
Print the tax calculation from your software
GOV.UK says that if you or your accountant use commercial software to do your return, you need to use that software to print your tax calculation. It might be called something different in the software, for example 'tax computation'. GOV.UK says to contact the company that makes the software if you have trouble printing.
Print the tax year overview when you use software
GOV.UK says that if you use commercial software you can still print a tax year overview from your HMRC online account.
Check what your lender requires
GOV.UK says to always check with the lender or mortgage provider what they require as evidence of your income.
GOV.UK says the lenders on its list accept either a copy of your tax calculation (SA302) printed from your HMRC online account or a tax calculation printed from commercial software used to submit returns. They will also need a tax year overview, which you can print from your HMRC online account.
Signing in to your HMRC online account
GOV.UK says there are 2 ways to sign in to HMRC online services: Government Gateway, with a user ID and password, or GOV.UK One Login, with an email address and password. If you already use HMRC online services, you continue to use the sign in details you have.
GOV.UK says that if you have never used HMRC online services you select 'Create new sign in details' when signing in, even if you have GOV.UK One Login sign in details from another government service or an email subscription.

Lenders, and the GOV.UK list

The list belongs to GOV.UK, so Tax Letters does not copy it here. Read the list itself, and ask your lender what it requires.

If you cannot print them
GOV.UK's Self Assessment enquiries page says to contact HMRC's online services helpdesk if you are having problems submitting your return online, have lost your online service username or password, or get any error messages in your online account or on a form.
HMRC's Self Assessment general enquiries line is 0300 200 3310, open Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm, and closed on bank holidays.
GOV.UK's Self Assessment enquiries page lists HMRC's digital assistant for help with, among other things, filing your tax return and paying your bill, requesting a refund and activation codes. If it cannot help you, you can ask to transfer to a webchat with an HMRC adviser, if they are available.

Checking that your lender accepts printed copies
GOV.UK says to check that your mortgage provider accepts documents you have printed yourself. Whether a lender accepts them is for the lender to say.
If you cannot get the documents
GOV.UK says you can contact HMRC if you have any problems getting the documents. The numbers and pages for contacting HMRC are in the section above.
If you want to ask an adviser
- Which years and which documents does my lender need: the tax calculation, the tax year overview, or both?
- My accountant files my return: who prints the documents, and from which software or account?
- My return for the latest year is not filed yet: what can I give the lender in the meantime?
- Is a printed copy enough for this lender, or do they want something else?
